WYNNE GOVERNMENT HONOURS NATIONAL ACCESS AWARENESS WEEK BY BREACHING THE ACCESSIBILITY FOR ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
No matter how frustrated, we soldier on, undeterred. Premier Wynne called me two months ago, warmly offering to work together on making Ontario fully accessible to people with disabilities. Today’s failure to obey the law should be a wake-up call to the government to take the entire accessibility issue off its back burner where it has languished for two years. Let today’s bad news spur our new premier to act decisively, boldly and broadly on accessibility. Let it cause her to restore the swiftness, determination and vigour on this issue that the government commendably demonstrated a decade ago, and to keep all her commitments on accessibility.

Harper Government Announces Concrete Measures to Give Better Access to Canadians With Disabilities to Their Communities
The Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State (Social Development), today announced that more Canadians with disabilities will gain better access to workplaces and services in their communities as a result of the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF).

Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation Endorses Our Call for the Ontario Government to Develop an Education Accessibility Standard
We are delighted to announce that the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) wrote the Ontario Government on September 3, 2013 to endorse and support our call for the development and enactment of an Education Accessibility Standard under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. OSSTF represents public high school teachers in Ontario.

Labor Rules to Boost Employment for Vets, Disabled
Labor Secretary Thomas Perez called the new policy a “win-win” that will benefit workers “who belong in the economic mainstream and deserve a chance to work and opportunity to succeed.” He said it also would benefit employers by increasing their access to a diverse pool of new workers.

Why The Media Silence On AODA?

Months ago, the Ontario Government honoured National Access Awareness Week by failing to meet a legal deadline to appoint a new Independent Review of how the Government is implementing AODA.
The Toronto Star carried a terrific guest editorial on May 31, another article in August, but otherwise, little else.
