The Integrated Accessibility Regulation (IAR) is Now Law!
Friday, June 3, 2011, just 10 days before the sixth anniversary of the day when the AODA went into effect, the McGuinty Government enacted and made public the new and finalized Integrated Accessibility Regulation (IAR). For Love of Shame or Fame-CNIB I Factor Critique
In 2009, the Canadian Institute for the Blind, here on referred to as CNIB, started an event that blanantly copied the style of American/Canadian Idol- may be it on a much smaller scale. Called the I Factor, this event is now in its third year, and is so side-lined that even CNIB’s own staffs- those are not directly involved with the program, aren’t inclined to discuss it.

McGuinty Government Dodges our Request that Presto Smart Card Not be Installed at TTC Until Fully Accessible but AODA Alliance Presses Again for a Clear Commitment
That June 8, 2011 letter does not give us the specific and full commitment we requested and need. When one first reads it, it sounds like a strong endorsement of accessibility. However, when read more closely, it turns out to be much less than that.

Loss of Full-Serve Stations Hurts Seniors, Disabled: Council
This move leaves Stouffville residents with one full-serve station, the Petro-Canada at Main Street and Tenth Line and a couple of councillors concerned. “The push has to be from our accessibility committees to say something to the province of Ontario to consider the disability of anybody,” said Mayor Wayne Emmerson.

Henderson: No Justice for the Intellectually Disabled
“It is important to understand that it is only the already disadvantaged category of witnesses … who must answer questions about their understanding of the duty to tell the truth,” added LEAF legal director Joanna Birenbaum. “No other category of witness is required to do so. Not even convicted perjurers are probed before taking the stand on whether they feel bound to tell the truth.”

Manitoba Creates Mental Health Court
The Manitoba government is spending more than $600,000 to establish a mental health court.

Toronto Transit Commission to Adopt Presto Smart Card BUT Will TTC and the City of Toronto Ensure Ontario Makes it Barrier-Free Before Implementing it?

Applying Web Usability Criteria for Vision-Impaired Users: Does It Really Improve Task Performance?
However, accessibility alone is not enough. Usability aspects need to be addressed as well. Indeed, accessibility and usability are frequently addressed as two separate issues, but disabled users need to have both accessible and usable applications. In fact, accessibility and usability are two intertwined aspects of Web site interaction, and if they are not properly integrated, Web sites can turn out to be either accessible but barely usable or usable but barely accessible. In both cases Web site navigation by disabled users is likely to be seriously compromised, because they either may not be able to access
the desired information (i.e., it is not accessible) or may find difficulty in arriving at what they need (in this case it is not usable).
