Amidst a pandemic that has disproportionately affected Black, Indigenous, poor and disabled communities, we’ve barely heard a word about disability issues from our federal government – except, that is, their intention to expand access to death for persons with disabilities through new legislation.
U of T Study Highlights Health-Care Barriers Women With Disabilities Face During Pregnancy
The finding, published recently in the journal JAMA Network Open, is the result of the largest study of maternal outcomes for women with disabilities in Canadian history, highlighting the need for better access to medical care in this population of women.

White Cane Week takes place across Canada in the first full week of February every year. The week raises awareness about how blind people travel and make a difference in their communities. In 2021, White Cane Week takes place from Sunday, February 7th to Saturday, February 13th.

Having been stuck in the snow before, McPhee said she’s often discouraged from heading out in the winter to walk her dog or do other activities alone, out of concern that she might find herself in the ‘humiliating’ situation again.

Disabled people outside of congregant care aren’t being prioritized in Canada’s vaccine rollout, and advocates say it’s just one more way their community isn’t being protected.
Ontario’s Life-and-Death Emergency Triage Protocol Remains a Work In Progress
Meanwhile, some doctors say a draft emergency standard of care – distributed to hospitals last month but not publicly released –
does not go far enough. They say it lacks a grim but necessary provision: The power to unplug patients who are unlikely to survive from life support without consent to make room for those with a better chance.
