Long-Sought New Accessibility Law Coming in 2018, But What Will it Look Like?

TORONTO Canadians with disabilities have their sights firmly set on 2018 when the federal government is expected to usher in long-sought legislation
designed to increase accessibility nationwide. The governing Liberals have promised to create a bill that would remove barriers in federally regulated sectors such as banking, interprovincial transportation, telecommunications and government-run services such as Canada Post.

Where Weve Failed to Live Up to the Promise of the Americans with Disabilities Act

When it comes to employment, then even with the overall US unemployment rate now 4.1% , the lowest in 17 years we have failed to live up to the promise of the ADA. It seems many employers have yet to recognize that people with disabilities can contribute economically and societally if sought out and accommodated.

Wheelchair-Accessible Toboggan Slide Opens in Winnipeg

The city of Winnipeg has opened a slide and toboggan designed to allow everyone to get in on the fun.

On Friday, the city unveiled a its first wheelchair-accessible slide, which doubles as a toboggan run in the winter, at St. Vital Park in the southern part of Winnipeg.

New Year, New AODA Rules Is Your Business Accessible ?

January 1st, 2018 brings a brand new set of requirements for the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA)

If you are not familiar with AODA, its comprised of a series of rules and regulations designed to make Ontario fully accessible within the next decade (with a goal of 2025). The rules are being implemented in phases, in order to give both small and large workplaces time to acclimatize to the changes and adjust both their physical spaces, as well as their policies.

Heathrow Enhances Service for Passengers with Hidden and Visible Disabilities

Heathrow today announced a multi-million pound package of investments and tools to improve the travel experience of passengers with disabilities and mobility restrictions at the airport.

The number of passengers requesting special assistance at Heathrow is rising at approximately 8% annually, with over one million requests in 2017 alone, more than any other European airport. Following a report by the Civil Aviation Authority this year, Heathrow is taking proactive steps to transform its
service for these passengers, backed by an investment of £23 million in a revamped, upgraded contract with its special assistance partner, OmniServ.

DOJ Nixes All Pending ADA Rulemakings, Including Website Access Rules

Businesses are, for the most part, better off without these rules but they need to remember that the absence of technical standards does not necessarily mean there are no obligations under the ADA with regard to these items. Title III of the ADA contains a general non-discrimination mandate and more general
rules that still require a public accommodation to ensure access to all its goods, services and benefits, subject to certain defenses.
