Toronto Restaurant Incident with Hearing Ear Dog Shows Need for the Ontario Government to Keep Its Promise to Effectively Enforce the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act
The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act requires Ontario to become fully accessible to over 1.7 million Ontarians with disabilities by 2025. The Ontario Government has pledged for years to effectively enforce this law. Recent reports in the Toronto Star highlight the need for the Ontario Government to keep its word.

Canada: AODA’s Workplace Emergency Response Information Requirements Already In Force: Are You In Compliance?
Since January 1, 2012, Ontario employers have been obligated to provide “individualized workplace emergency response information to employees who have a disability, if the disability is such that the individualized information is necessary and the employer is aware of the need for accommodation due to the employee’s disability.”

Lift People With Disabilities Out of Poverty, Says OPSEU Members at ODSP Lobby
People with disabilities and the front line staff who work with them joined forces on April 10 to tell Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs): improve disability benefits, but not in the ways recommended by a provincial commission.

EEOC Sues Wal-Mart for Sexual Harassment, Retaliation and Disability Discrimination
CLEVELAND Wal-Mart Stores East, L.P. violated federal law by allowing a male employee at an Akron Walmart store to subject a developmentally disabled female co-worker to sexually inappropriate conduct and then retaliating against her for her opposition to the sexual misconduct, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it announced today.

Spring Rolls Apologizes for Treatment of Hearing-Impaired Man with Service Dog
The restaurant chain says their franchisees won’t restrict where the man and his Hearing Ear dog sit.
But after hearing that Hopgood had a similar incident with little support from the chain, Stelmacovich said, “This is clearly not an isolated incident . . . This is a little bit concerning now; it sounds more like a systemic problem.”

Dim or Brighter Prospects for Welfare Reform?: Fiorito
The report on welfare reform in Ontario does not go far enough.
Ted McMeekin is not a flashy man; he was, at one time, the minister of agriculture in Ontario. But he has a pretty good understanding of social issues, and he is a committed volunteer, and now he is the minister of community and social services.
