AODA Alliance Submits a Supplemental Brief to the Pinto Human Rights Code Review

AODA Alliance Also Responds to Criticisms of Us Levelled by the Human Rights Legal Support Centre

Our April 11, 2012 letter explains why we question this conduct by a human rights agency, whose mandate comes from the Human Rights Code, who receives its funding from the Ontario Government, and whose website bears the logo of the Government of Ontario. Our main brief explains how the Centre has in some ways gone beyond the role of explaining to the public its work under the new human rights system. It has in effect stepped into the shoes of those private individuals who successfully proposed and advocated for Bill 107 back in 2006. This latest development further illustrates that point.

Burlington City Council Approves Accessibility Design Standards

The accessibility design standards will ensure all new City of Burlington facilities will be accessible to all and that existing facilities will be retrofitted, renovated or altered over time to comply with the standards according to council’s decision.

Taxi of Tomorrow Faces Lawsuits of the Day After

The issue at hand applies here, too. The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act is going to require massive changes in making transportation services accessible. This includes public transit and taxis. One in seven people in Ontario has a disability, according to the provincial government, and that number will rise as the population ages.

Minister of National Defence Announces Enhancements to Benefits Offered to our Ill and Injured

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, is proud to announce enhancements to the minimum benefits paid under the Canadian Forces (CF) Long Term Disability (LTD) program to medically released CF personnel. With an investment of nearly $113 million, these enhancements are now in line with the Earning Loss Benefits (ELB) offered by Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) to disabled veterans.

Money spent on accessibility is bound to have returns, supporters say. “Any of the businesses that adapt to this quicker there are billions of dollars that are spent by people that fall into that category,” Kiru says. “It’s only going to increase.”

Who Will Give Devin a Chance?

Devin Stevenson says he knows autism often holds him back.

He sometimes has trouble focusing. He has a tendency to get overly engrossed in one aspect of a task. And, if you were to explain something to Devin, he might need you to repeat it a second time, though he is quick to point out he’s not being purposefully inattentive.
