Accessibility Site Checks

The site evaluations found in this section are based on the criteria below. Only a few random pages for each site were checked since it is Accessibility News's experience that accessibility errors are consistent throughout a website and that some pages are much worse than others, especially when you take into account Flash, other Multimedia and forms.

Guidelines

These guidelines explain how to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities. The guidelines are intended for all Web content developers (page authors and site designers) and for developers of authoring tools. The primary goal of these guidelines is to promote accessibility. However, following them will also make Web content more available to all users, whatever user agent they are using (e.g., desktop browser, voice browser, mobile phone, automobile-based personal computer, etc.) or constraints they may be operating under (e.g., noisy surroundings, under- or over-illuminated rooms, in a hands-free environment, etc.). Following these guidelines will also help people find information on the Web more quickly. These guidelines do not discourage content developers from using images, video, etc., but rather explain how to make multimedia content more accessible to a wide audience.

"Accessible" means usable to a wide range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning difficulties, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech difficulties, photosensitivity and combinations of these. Following these guidelines will also make your Web content more accessible to the vast majority of users, including older users. It will also enable people to access Web content using many different devices - including a wide variety of assistive technologies.

Validation Tools

Sites were checked against the above Guidelines with one or more of the following online tools:

These online tools check pages for "Automatic Checkpoints" and "Manual Checkpoints". Currently checks are broken down into 3 Priorities:

Passing a Priority's "Automatic Checkpoint" does not necessarily mean that it passes that particular "Priority" and needs to have its "Manual Checkpoint" checked by a web accessibility professional such as Badeyes Design and Consulting www.badeyes.com

Note: Accessibility News does not believe in just passing the Minimum standards (Priority 1), or even Priority 1 and 2 as it will still be an accessibility barrier to some groups and we don't believe that any one group is more deserving than another. Fully Accessible should be the benchmark that all web developers should strive for.

It should also be noted that Accessibility News does not rely solely on automated online checking tools, our extensive knowledge of W3C Guidelines and todays Best Practices are also taken into account for each Site Check.
