Shelbourne

Chair;
Debbie Harrison

Description;

The Town of Shelburne's AAC was established in 2002. It serves a growing community of approximately 5000 people, giving it the distinction of having been formed by a progressive community that was not legally required to form a committee under the ODA.

The seven-member committee is comprised of one representative of town council and six volunteers from the community. At present, five of the seven members are people with disabilities.

Although the committee comes from a small community and lacks the resources of larger AAC's, it has experienced its share of successes as well as challenges. Chief amongst the challenges has been the amount of time it has taken, because of the community's small size, to build a core group of committee members. The committee is proud of work it has accomplished in successfully advising the town on the creation of additional accessible parking spaces, plus the retrofits of Shelburne's library and the County of Dufferin's main senior citizens' residence. At present, the AAC is working with the town's recreational centre as it seeks to improve accessibility, and with merchants to ensure that accessible parking provision is enforced.

A unique skillset which Shelburne's AAC offers is expertise at the level of best international practice in making museums and art galleries accessible to people with different types of disabilities. This applies not only to facilities planning but also to museum management issues and the way in which access affects core museum functions such as exhibit design, programming and curatorship.
