The Municipal Advisory Committee for Disabled Persons (MACDP) was formed as a Standing Committee of Council in 1991. The goal of MACDP is to work toward a Five Star Community with access for all to: employment, education, recreation, housing and transportation.
The original committee, formed by the Town of Lindsay, was made up of seven volunteers from the community and a member of Town Council as liaison. The volunteers are either disabled or people who work with people who are disabled.
In January 2001, when amalgamation formed the new City of Kawartha Lakes, MACDP increased from seven (7) members to fourteen (14) consisting of eleven to thirteen (11-13) members of the public and one (1) council representative(s) and their responsibility has expanded from a population of 17,000 to 72,000 with an area of 3366 square kms.
In order to reflect the changing needs of people with disabilities, the committee increased its goals from a Five Star Community to Six by adding Information to the list of areas to which people with disabilities need access.
