Description;
The Cornwall AAC has been in existence since 2002. An Accessibility Plan was
written as mandated by the ODA and the province. Every year the
Committee has taken items from the plan and presented a priority list to Council
for approval and direction to its administration for implementation. We
are pleased to report that the committee has had good success with improving
access to city owned buildings and services provided by the city.
- Civic Complex- New retrofit of washrooms on main level to provide full private
access to persons with disabilities
Aquatic Centre is completely accessible with ramps into pools, equipment for
disabled, pictogram and white on black signage with Braille, accessible showers
and change areas for wheelchair users.
- Stairnose Markings on all stairs within and leading in and out of all buildings
owned by the corporation.
- Criteria Changed for Handi Transit to allow blind and low vision clients and
persons with cognitive disabilities to ride.
An Accessibility Technician was hired by Transit to provide programs and start
initiatives such as "attendantride free pass"
Aand "medical identification card" and "destination cards"
to encourage increased rider ship on conventional buses.
- Zoomtext software installed at the Public Library at three computer stations,
screen readers and magnification capabilities for patrons with low vision
and special keyboards; Funded by the Friends of the Library.
- Two busy intersections where audible signals have already been installed, with
six on the list, one to be installed each year.
