The Kathleen Wynne Government has still not kept its 2003 election pledge, reaffirmed to us again in the 2011 election, to effectively enforce the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. We give an update on two important items in our campaign to get the Government to keep its word.

Guide Dogs: Study Finds Shops Bar Users

Secret filming shows blind people being illegally refused entry to restaurants and shops because of their guide dogs.

Philip Biggs, of Hearing Dogs For Deaf People, says there is a lot of misunderstanding about access for guide and hearing dogs.

A new study by the charity Guide Dogs has shown that blind people are being illegally turned away from restaurants and shops because of their canine companions.

Fedora Outlier: Wednesday Roundup For September 25, 2013

With this technology, a person would be able to purchase a ticket at the ticket booth and actually be able to locate their seat assignment. This research being done at Auburn University in Alabama will enable the blind to navigate areas in buildings, stadiums, theaters, and any other building they chose to enter and interact with their surroundings. Could this eventually help blind individuals navigate a hospital, doctors office building or other professional place that they previously needed an assistant to maneuver?

U.S. Proposes ADA Compliance for Public Websites

When Congress enacted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, the public Internet did not exist. Over the past 23 years, making the Internet accessible to those with disabilities has been a low priority for both the federal government and Internet businesses, bolstered by the fact that court decisions refuted the idea that the ADA applied to the Internet. Now, the federal government, with prodding from groups representing the disabled, is acknowledging how much of daily life the Internet affects.

Doug Paulley Wins First Bus Discrimination Ruling

First’s website states: “Wheelchair users have priority use of the wheelchair space”, but adds that “the driver has no power to compel passengers to move in this way and is reliant upon the goodwill of the passengers concerned” and “if a fellow passenger refuses to move [the wheelchair user] will need to wait for the next bus”.
