Student-Led Mental Health Initiatives Across Ontario Shifting How Schools Provide Supports

As Canadian universities and colleges face increasing pressure to provide better mental-health services on campus, students are looking to give schools fresh ideas on how to tackle the issue.

That’s how 24-year-old Ryan Golt became involved with working alongside Montreal’s McGill University to support students. But before he got there, he faced his own mental-health crisis.

Accessibility at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan

Japan is hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics. As usual, the Paralympics will follow. It is expected that forty million people will travel to Japan to watch the Olympics and Paralympics. As a result, Japan is examining accessibility at the 2020 Summer Olympics. While Japan is accessible in some places already, the country will be making improvements between now and 2020. The goal is to ensure accessibility for everybody at the 2020 Summer Olympics so that athletes and fans of all abilities can enjoy the Games without facing barriers.

Flex Seating in the Classroom Benefits Kids with Disabilities

Remember the days of classrooms that had one seating plan? Usually, the desks were all facing the front and set in rigid rows. But, those days are long gone. Instead, classroom teachers are choosing collaborative setups, such as clustered desks. What’s more, is that some teachers are choosing flex seating in the classroom. Consequently, this shift in classroom management may help kids with disabilities to learn.

IEPs Help Kids with Disabilities in the Classroom

With a brand-new school year just a few weeks away, it is important that parents are setting up their kids for a successful year. Sometimes this may include an Individual Education Plan (IEP). An IEP helps kids with disabilities learn on an even playing field with their peers. Without IEPs, some students with disabilities may feel overwhelmed and become discouraged. If you are the parent of a kid with a disability, it is important for you to understand what an IEP is so that you can be actively involved in the creation process.

AODA Alliance Presses the Ford Government to Immediately Lift Its Freeze on the Work of Standards Development Committees, Appointed under Ontario’s Disabilities Act To Make Recommendations on Needed Accessibility Standards

The AODA Alliance today wrote the Ford Government’s Minister for Accessibility and Seniors, Raymond Cho. It urges the Government to now lift its freeze on the mandatory work of advisory committees which have been appointed under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act to advise the Ontario
Government on needed reforms to tear down accessibility barriers that 1.9 million Ontarians with disabilities suffer from in the areas of access to education, to employment, to health care and to information and communication.

Service Dog Refusal Results in Apologies From Ministry, DriveTest

Henry said the ministry and DriveTest are fully committed to meeting their obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), including establishing practices for providing services, providing the appropriate customer service training to employees, and ensuring DriveTest locations are accessible to those with disabilities.
