WYNNE GOVERNMENT HONOURS NATIONAL ACCESS AWARENESS WEEK BY BREACHING THE ACCESSIBILITY FOR ONTARIANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
No matter how frustrated, we soldier on, undeterred. Premier Wynne called me two months ago, warmly offering to work together on making Ontario fully accessible to people with disabilities. Today’s failure to obey the law should be a wake-up call to the government to take the entire accessibility issue off its back burner where it has languished for two years. Let today’s bad news spur our new premier to act decisively, boldly and broadly on accessibility. Let it cause her to restore the swiftness, determination and vigour on this issue that the government commendably demonstrated a decade ago, and to keep all her commitments on accessibility.

Ontario’s Accessibility Standards Advisory Council/Standards Development Committee

Ontario’s Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) requires the establishment of an Accessibility Standards Advisory Council/Standards Development Committee.
Jim Sanders, former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Institute for the Blind, was appointed as Chair of the council in January 2013.

iPad Use With Blind and Partially Sighted Children

Birmingham University researchers have published the findings of a survey of teachers training to become qualified teachers of children with a visual impairment. The report “The use of Apple iPads amongst Trainee Teachers of Visually Impaired Students” provides a snapshot showing how 49 teachers are currently using iPads to support their work with children who have a vision impairment.

Ontario: AODA Activists Are Anti-Environment

Minister Eric Hoskins held a media conference to provide new information on the latest AODA situation. To date, the Ontario Government has neither met its legal requirement to appoint an Independent Review of its implementation of the landmark AODA legislation, nor has it explained its failure.
