Mobile Device Helps Teach Academics, Life Skills to Disabled Child

When the iPhone came out in 2007, Mabie immediately saw that it could benefit people with disabilities like his daughter. For instance, traditional assistive communication devices that help non-verbal people speak can cost thousands of dollars. The iPhone can offer the same capability for a fraction of the cost.

Ticket Agent Layoffs Worry Passengers With Special Needs

Via With the Kitchener VIA station losing all of its manned staff by this October, what will passengers needing any form of assistance at the station do? Ticket agents frequently help passengers with physical disabilities board the train. Passengers will also not be able to make exchanges or claim refunds.

KITCHENER Unstaffed Via Rail train stations may leave passengers who have mobility issues unable to board their trains, says a local advocate for people with disabilities.

Human Rights Tribunal Dismisses Disabled Man’s Bid to Have Town Pay for Snow Removal

A human rights tribunal has dismissed a disabled man’s application to have his town remove snow pushed into his driveway by its snowploughs, because it would cost the municipality a steep $75 an hour to do it.

Ivan Williams of Iroquois Falls, Ont., said he previously paid a private contractor $15 to clear his whole driveway, and the town is ‘‘exaggerating’’ the cost.

Bad attitudes do not cause disability any more than good attitudes guarantee health, and what may appear to be a harmless, if patronising message is actually judgemental and damaging. Until disabled people have all the same rights that non-disabled people do, it is wrong to assume that this kind of objectification can ever be benign.
