The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) & Web Accessibility

On March 6, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that a consent decree with H&R Block had been entered requiring the company to establish accessibility of its websites and mobile apps under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The decree resolves the department’s allegations that individuals with disabilities are denied full and equal enjoyment of the company’s tax-preparation focused goods and services provided online.

Gartner Says New U.S. Government Rules Will Require IT Leaders to Consider How IT Infrastructure Can Help Promote Employment Opportunities for People with Disabilities

New U.S. government rules requiring employers to take more affirmative action to hire people with disabilities will mean that by 2015, 50 percent of organizations will have technology projects underway to support the enablement of disabled employees, according to Gartner, Inc.

Not Compliant With AODA? Ignore Compliance Audit Notice at Your Peril

Some labour and employment lawyers say they are receiving calls from clients who have been notified they are going be audited by the Ministry of Economic Development Trade and Employment because they didn’t know about the legislation and failed to file a compliance report by December 2012.

Ontario’s Accessibility Standards Advisory Council Announces Public Consultations on Its Initial Proposal for Revisions to the 2007 Customer Service Accessibility Standard – But Refuses Our Requests to Make This Consultation More Open, Inclusive and Effective

On Monday, March 3, 2014, the Ontario Government posted for public comment the Accessibility Standards Advisory Council’s (ASAC) initial proposal for revisions to the Customer Service Accessibility Standard. The Customer Service Accessibility Standard was enacted under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act in 2007. The AODA requires that it be reviewed no later than five years after it was enacted.
